How to Make Your NDIS Budget Last

Want help keeping track of your budget?

Get started, at no cost to you

    1. Know your budget

Check your plan in the my NDIS participant portal or app, or in your plan manager's portal. Know how much is in each support budget, what you've spent and what's left. Every plan has up to 4 support budgets: Core, Capacity Building, Capital and Recurring.

    2. Know which funding is flexible

Funding marked "flexible" can be used across support categories in the same support budget. Funding marked "stated" must be used as your plan describes. You can't move funding between support budgets, and funding in other budgets can't be used for Recurring transport.

    3. Pace your spending

Compare what you've spent with how much of your plan period has passed. Our NDIS budget calculator works out a steady weekly spend. If you're already off track, see what to do about overspend and underspend.

    4. Compare providers within the price limits

For plan-managed and NDIA-managed supports, the NDIS price limits apply whether a provider is registered or not. Providers can't charge more than the limit, but many charge less, so comparing prices can stretch your budget.

    5. Spend on what you need, not to use it up

Supports must still be reasonable and necessary and in line with your plan. Whether unspent funding stays available depends on what happens at the end of your plan: under a plan continuation it stays in the continued plan, but from 1 February 2027 plan renewals replace continuations and unspent funds won't carry over.

    6. Check your plan dates for the 2026–27 changes

Social, economic and community participation budgets are reduced by 50% and improved daily living skills budgets by 10% when a plan is created or reassessed from 1 October 2026, or renewed from 1 February 2027. See NDIS plan changes for 2026–27.

    7. Ask for a change if your needs change

If there's a significant and ongoing change in your functional capacity, support needs or living, education, work or informal support arrangements, you, your plan nominee or your child representative can ask for an unscheduled plan reassessment. The NDIA has 90 days to decide whether to reassess your plan. Short-term or urgent changes go through a plan variation.

    8. Use your plan manager's tools

If you're plan-managed with us, the portal sends low-funding alerts, so you can see a problem before a provider tells you an invoice didn't go through. We also work alongside your support coordinator. Learn more about how plan management works.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I move funding between categories?

Flexible funding can be used across support categories in the same support budget, for example across flexible Core categories. Stated funding must be used as your plan describes. You can't move funding between support budgets, such as from Core to Capacity Building or Capital.

    What happens to unused funding?

It depends on what happens when your plan ends. If your plan is continued, unspent funding stays in the continued plan. From 1 February 2027, plan renewals replace continuations, and unspent funds from the previous plan won't carry over.

How do I know if I'm overspending?

Compare each budget's balance with how much of your plan period has passed. Our NDIS budget calculator works out a steady weekly spend, and your plan manager's statements show what has been claimed.
