What is a plan implementation meeting?

The NDIA describes it as a meeting for you and your my NDIS contact, and "our way of helping you get started with using your NDIS plan".

In the meeting, the NDIA says it will:

    • talk you through using your plan
    • talk you through what NDIS supports you can buy with your funding
    • find providers that meet your needs and will help you work towards your goals
    • show you how to use the my NDIS portals and my NDIS app
    • answer your questions.

Do I have to have one?

No. It's optional. The NDIA says access to your approved plan and funding isn't affected whether you have the meeting or not.

It suggests the meeting is usually a good idea when you get your first plan, or when your new plan has changes from your last one. You can tell your NDIA planner you want one at your plan meeting.

When and how does it happen?

    • When?

What the NDIA says: It will make a time within 7 days of your plan being approved, if you want to meet

    • How long?

What the NDIA says: As long as you need. Usually about an hour

    • Where?

What the NDIA says: In person, virtually over Microsoft Teams, or over the phone

    • Who runs it?

What the NDIA says: Your my NDIS contact, or, depending on your situation, your support coordinator or psychosocial recovery coach

    • Can I bring someone?

What the NDIA says: Yes: a family member, friend, support coordinator, recovery coach or someone else you're comfortable with

    • Can I reschedule?

What the NDIA says: Yes. Tell your my NDIS contact if the time no longer works, including if your support person can't make it

The NDIA says you'll need evidence of identity and verification, and consent to share information with the people who come with you.

What should I ask in the meeting?

Read your plan first and note anything you're unsure about. Then take these questions.

    The NDIA's suggested questions:

    1. What NDIS supports can I buy with my funding?
    2. How do I keep my budget on track?
    3. Where do I find providers, and how do I choose the right one for me?
    4. When do I need to use a registered provider?
    5. How do I use the my NDIS portal and app?
    6. How are my supports paid for? (for plan-managed or NDIA-managed funding)

Questions about how your plan is managed:

    1. Which of my budgets are plan-managed, self-managed or NDIA-managed? Your plan says which budgets are plan-managed. Plan-managed sections say "This funding is plan managed".
    2. Is there funding for a plan manager? If any budget is plan-managed, the NDIA includes plan manager funding in your capacity building supports budget. It's a stated support, so it can only pay for plan management.
    3. Which of my supports are stated? Funding in capacity building categories is stated, so you can't move it between categories.
    4. Can I change how my plan is managed later? You can ask. The NDIA says you don't have to wait for a new plan, and it will update your current plan if it agrees with your request.

Isn't this where I choose plan management?

    your management options

Not usually. The NDIA says it discusses your management options at your plan meeting, before the plan is approved. The plan implementation meeting comes after.

If you didn't ask for plan management, or you've changed your mind, you can still ask. The NDIA says you can ask for a plan manager during your plan, and you don't have to wait until it creates a new plan with you.

Plan-managed participants can choose registered or unregistered providers, except for supports that must use a registered provider, such as SIL, SDA and some behaviour supports. Funding managed by the NDIA has to be used with registered providers. Our plan management page explains what a plan manager does day to day.

    What happens after the meeting?

A short checklist for the first weeks:

    • ☐ Record your plan manager as a "my provider" if you have one. The NDIA says all plan managers must be recorded as my providers to be paid. You can do it in the my NDIS portal, or by calling the NDIA on 1800 800 110.
    • ☐ Tell your providers who your plan manager is, so they know where to send invoices.
    • ☐ Make service agreements. The NDIA released a new service agreement template, checklist and guidance on 13 October 2026. You must have one with SDA providers, and they're encouraged for SIL providers. For other supports they're recommended, not required.
    • ☐ Check your budgets regularly in the participant portals or my NDIS app. The NDIA says your plan manager should give you a report every month.
    • ☐ Expect a check-in. The NDIA says that at the end of the implementation meeting it will arrange a check-in with you at least once a year.

    For support coordinators

The NDIA lists support coordinators and recovery coaches as people who may run the plan implementation meeting, or come to it with the participant.
